Vigna Schiena d'Asino er Mastrojannis topvin. Det er en enkeltmarks Brunello di Montalcino, som lagres i hele 42 måneder på Allier egetræsfade og siden 12 måneder på flaske i kælderen hos Mastrojanni.

Schiena d'Asino har en karakteristisk tæt, men gennemsigtig, rød farve og næsen fremstår med toner af vilde bær ledsaget af friske krydderurter og tørret tobak. Smagen starter kraftigt og nærmest barskt, og ender med en generøs og lang eftersmag.

Kan nydes til kraftige retter, men er fremragende på egen hånd. En vin der bør nydes i gode venners lag.

Brightly saturated full red. Captivating aromas of red cherry, sweet spices, orange peel, and minerals are nuanced and deep. Silky on entry, then bracing, penetrating and complex in the mid-palate, with outstanding laser-like focus and energy to the red berry, mint, licorice, mineral, and candied violet flavors. Superb tension coupled with outstanding clarity and cut make this one of the better Brunellos released this year. Finishes long and fine-grained.

With only 5,000 bottles produced, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino might prove difficult to find and buy. If you do locate this wine however, I am very happy to recommend it despite its high price. All the senses are treated to a full-on Brunello experience that excels on all fronts, from intensity and balance to length of mouthfeel. Fruit for this wine comes from a single vineyard site located at the crest of a hill, or the so-called donkey's back ("schiena d'asino" in Italian). The vines were planted in 1975 and this vineyard designate wine is only made in the best years. The buoyant bouquet delivers dark fruit backed by tarry spice and savory cured tobacco. This wine offers sophistication, power and elegance.
